Cochise College freshman Johnishia Welles, a Phoenix native, and Matt Korcheck, a sophomore from Tucson, were named the Arizona Community College Athletic Conference Players of the Week for Division I on Monday.
Welles, a 6-foot forward who last attended Barry Goldwater High School, averaged 13.5 points and 6.5 rebounds per game in the Apaches’ wins over Glendale, 79-77 in overtime, and Eastern Arizona, 62-48, last week.
Welles also had five steals and three assists in the two games.
“Johnishia really stepped up this week and gave us a good inside presence,” said first-year head coach Laura Hughes. “She finished well and was looking to aggressively score at times when we needed her to. This is really a team award, as the guards did a great job of getting her the ball in position to score.”
Korcheck averaged 26 points in wins over Glendale, 107-86, and Eastern, 113-87, including a 30-point performance against EAC. He also averaged 8.5 rebounds and 3 assists per game.
The Cochise men are 7-2 overall and 2-1 in conference games, while the women are 7-4, 2-1 heading into Wednesday’s home contests against Chandler-Gilbert. The women begin at 5:30 and the men at 7:30. Admission to home games is free.
