DOUGLAS — Lecia Brooks of the Southern Poverty Law Center, Azra Hussain of the Islamic Speakers Bureau of Arizona, and members of Battered Immigrant Women Project of Southeastern Arizona are among the speakers expected to present during the fourth annual Cochise College Douglas Campus Awareness Week, Nov. 5-8.
All events, free and open to the public, will be held at the Little Theatre on Cochise College’s Douglas Campus beginning at 11:30 a.m. each day. The aim of the four-day series of Awareness Week events is to inform the community about these issues in society and to create open discussion.
Monday, Nov. 5 features the Cochise College Holocaust Memorial Project. This is a student-led discussion of the history and implications of the Holocaust. The aim is to increase civic engagement and foster tolerance. The focus will be on the causes and consequences of the Holocaust and on the potential for future genocides.
Tuesday, Nov. 6 features Voting Rights by Lecia Brooks, Outreach Director for the Southern Poverty Law Center. A special presentation for election day, this event will focus on the Voting Rights Act and contemporary voter suppression, featuring contemporary stories with national resonance.
Wednesday, Nov. 7 features speakers from the Battered Immigrant Women Project of Southern Arizona (BIWP). The BIWP will discuss the plight of undocumented immigrant women who are survivors of domestic violence. The focus will be raising awareness of the challenges these women face, such as isolation in a foreign country, constant fear of deportation, and believing they are at the mercy of their spouse to gain legal status. In rural areas, limited programs and resources exacerbate these challenges.
Thursday, Nov. 8 features Islam 101 by Azra Hussain, President of the Islamic Speakers Bureau of Arizona. This presentation will provide accurate information about Islam and Muslims and explore the extraordinary range and richness of the way American Muslims live.
