Prior to its regularly-scheduled Lunch Lecture Series beginning in early February, the Cochise College Center for Lifelong Learning will offer one of its most popular lectures next week.

“Zapotec Weavings” will begin at 12:10 p.m. Wednesday, Jan. 23, at the Cochise College Sierra Vista Campus in room 702. The hour-long free lecture features Alex Martinez, an artist and master weaver from Oaxaca, Mexico.

Martinez will discuss his family’s long history in the art of rug weaving using ancient methods, natural fibers and coloring agents. The lecture also includes a looming demonstration, and Martinez will have a large inventory of handmade rugs available for purchase.

The Center for Lifelong Learning’s Lunch Lecture Series is presented each semester in Douglas, Sierra Vista and Benson as a way to offer members of the community an opportunity to hear fascinating stories and learn about a wide array of topics in a no-pressure environment. Each weekly lecture features a new topic and presenter. Attendees are welcome to bring a lunch to enjoy while they listen.
