DOUGLAS – Cochise College sophomore Michael Maya was named the Arizona Community College Athletic Conference Division I Player of the Week, announced Monday.
In last week’s wins over Phoenix College, 89-81 in overtime, and Central Arizona, 92-91, the 6-foot guard from Albuquerque, N.M., who transferred from Eastern New Mexico University this season, averaged 25 points per game, 2.5 rebounds per game and two steals per game.
Maya is the fourth Apache to earn the honor so far this season. Mark Simmons, Nathan Sobey and Matt Korcheck were recognized in previous weeks.
“Michael made big plays in both wins last week,” said Cochise head coach Jerry Carrillo. “He has been ‘clutch.'”
The Cochise men have stretched their winning streak this season to 15 games with last week’s close victories. The Apaches are 18-2 this season heading into a non-conference home game against Tohono O’odham on Wednesday. The game starts at 7:30 p.m. and admission is free.
