An article written by Cochise College nursing faculty members Vicky J. King, RN, MSN, and Jim King, RN, MSN, CRNA, APN-C, has been accepted for publication in Teaching and Learning in Nursing, the official journal of the National Organization for Associate Degree Nursing.
The article chronicles the Kings’ experience developing a “blended” course in nursing and pharmacology. Blended courses split their meeting requirements between the Internet and the physical classroom and have grown in popularity among students because of their flexibility. The Kings’ nursing-pharmacology course meets every third week for a three-hour class, and the rest of the content is covered online.
The Kings began actively teaching their blended course in spring 2009 and now teach four classes each semester using this format.
“It is always a work in progress, and we use student and faculty input each semester to make improvements,” Vicky said.
Both of the Kings are associate faculty in the Nursing and Allied Health Department. Vicky teaches pharmacology and nutrition, and Jim teaches pharmacology.
“Personal Experiences and Lessons Learned from Building a Blended Nursing Pharmacology Course,” will appear in the July issue of the journal, which is dedicated to the advancement of associate degree nursing education and practice, and promotes collaboration in charting the future of health care education and delivery.
