SIERRA VISTA — Cochise College partnered with the University of Arizona last week to host its first PharmCamp at the Sierra Vista Campus. About 20 elementary and middle school students from the area spent June 4-8 discovering more about the world of pharmacists and other aspects of environmental health through lab activities, lectures and a visit to a local pharmacy.
The University of Arizona College of Pharmacy has hosted PharmCamp for the last 15 years for students in Tucson-area schools. This year, besides Tucson and Sierra Vista, PharmCamp was also held in Yuma.
Cochise College science department chair Tasneem Ashraf is also the sponsor of the college’s pre-pharmacy club, which spearheaded the collaboration with UA’s Pharmacy School to bring the event to Cochise County.
“The children were wonderful,” Ashraf said. “It is always encouraging to work with kids of this age. Their young minds and curiosity about the world of science are refreshing.”
The camp was limited to 20 students, who filled out a brief application in order to be considered for a spot. Those who attended enjoyed a week of free activities that included making their own hand sanitizer, lip balm and antiperspirant; learning about hand washing and CPR from the nursing department; and winding down with some PharmCamp Jeopardy.
