In light of Friday’s decision by the Secretary of the Army to suspend Tuition Assistance, the Cochise College Foundation has re-opened its scholarship application system. The new deadline for scholarship application submissions is March 20.
According to GoArmyEd, “soldiers will no longer be permitted to submit new requests for Tuition Assistance. However, soldiers currently enrolled in courses approved for Tuition Assistance are not affected, and will be allowed to complete current course enrollment(s).”
The GoArmyEd release goes on to state, “the Army understands the impacts of this decision and will re-evaluate the decision if the budgetary situation improves.”
All students at Cochise College can apply for scholarships from the Foundation. Scholarships are awarded for the 2013-14 school year and are available for both full-time and part-time students. Generally, students need to be enrolled in six or more credits to qualify.
This year, the Foundation has more than 100 scholarships available, totaling about $300,000. All students have to do is complete the application process to verify eligibility, file a FAFSA by April 1 and register for the fall semester by the beginning of May.
Scholarships do not need to be repaid but are considered part of a student’s financial aid package. Most scholarships have been provided by individuals, organizations and companies with ties to Cochise County.
