DOUGLAS — The Cochise College soccer team played strong on Sophomore Day, defeating Mesa 2-1 in overtime on Saturday.
It was an important rebound after a 1-0 loss to Scottsdale last Thursday. The Apaches are 8-8-3 overall and 8-7-2 in the Arizona Community College Athletic Conference standings heading into their regular-season finale Saturday at South Mountain.
“The top six teams go to playoffs, and currently we hold the fifth-place spot,” said Cochise College head coach Andrea Daniels. “We have to win on Saturday.”
Against Mesa, the Apaches were down by a goal heading into the second half, when Cochise responded with a goal by Talya De Leon. The game was tied at the end of regulation and the teams went into sudden death overtime. Lisa Christensen served a free kick deep into Mesa territory, the Apache offense crashed the goal and Itzel Ramos scored.
South Mountain is currently last in the ACCAC standings, 0-16 so far this season in conference play. Cochise defeated South Mountain 3-0 earlier this season in Douglas.
