“There are so many opportunities that nobody takes advantage of,” says Celia Jenkins, STEM Pathways Coordinator at Cochise College.
STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Math) occupations are projected to grow by 17.0 percent from 2008 to 2018 compared to 9.8 percent growth for non-STEM occupations, according to ESA.gov.
In preparation for the predicted growth rate, Cochise College submitted a grant proposal to the Science Foundation of Arizona in 2009. The grant aimed to fund employment opportunities for students pursuing a STEM degree. In 2011, the grant was approved and provided employment for 50 STEM students at Cochise College.
“The whole point of the grant was to let the employers try the students for free,” says Celia.
The majority of these Cochise College STEM students were employed through Fort Huachuca. After funds were depleted, instead of terminating the employment opportunities, more employers came forward.
I.S.C Consulting, Northrop Grumman, and Information Innovators Inc. are all companies who offer entry-level positions to freshmen and sophomore students. Cochise College’s STEM programs were able to employ 75 additional students, this time at the cost of the employers.
Students were featured in INC’s Corporate Newsletter and received another contract for an additional 3 to 5 years of employment.
“The opportunities are competitive and are meant for ambitious students,” says Celia Jenkins.
Applicants do not need to hold a degree, but they must maintain a 3.0 GPA or higher. They need to be proficient in advanced math topics and recommended by a faculty or staff member. Additionally, they need to be at least 18 years or older.
Current positions are available for the summer and throughout the year. Positions are designed specifically for students. Wages vary depending on position but can range from $20,000 to $48,000 per year.
Students are encouraged to apply as soon as possible though no time restrictions are currently set. For more information on internships and job placements, contact Celia Jenkins at jenkinsc@cochise.edu.
