Cochise College Women’s Basketball team against IVC

Imperial, CA/Chula Vista, CA—The Cochise College women’s basketball team enjoyed a victorious weekend, winning both of its games in California and getting off to a 2-0 start in its 2015-2016 campaign. The first contest took place against Imperial Valley College on Friday night, which saw Cochise win in a 69-27 rout. Rauline Martinez and Sophia Elenga led the team in scoring, with 12 points each. Arianna Anderson shouldered most of the rebounding load with 9 boards, while chipping in 11 points. Tatyana McFarland added 10 points with Coulter Bowlen, dishing out 5 assists.

Cochise used a smothering defense to hold Imperial Valley to just 13 made field goals on 25% shooting, while shooting 41% from the field themselves and out-rebounding their opponent 52-18.

The weekend continued with Cochise traveling to the San Diego area and taking on Southwestern in Chula Vista, CA on Saturday. Cochise picked up right where it left off from the previous game, winning 79-33. Rauline Martinez continued to do well by leading the team with 12 points and adding 3 assists and 3 steals. Lupita Choa had 9 points and 5 rebounds, Coulter Bowlen had 9 points, 15 rebounds, and 1 block, and Sophia Elenga added 8 points, 11 rebounds, and 3 blocks. Megan Torney contributed a solid 8-rebound performance.

In another game where its defense made the difference, Cochise held Southwestern to only 11 made field goals on 20% shooting and won the rebounding battle 62-22. The 4th quarter was particularly key, as Cochise outscored Southwestern 30-6.

“I thought we got better as the weekend went on,” stated head coach Laura Hughes, “[It was a] good learning experience for our young team.”
