The Creative Writing Celebration on Friday, April 5, at the Cochise College Sierra Vista Campus will feature renowned poet, DJ, cultural worker, and author Logan Phillips. He will deliver a workshop to help writers improve their writing.

“If poetry is wrestling into words that which can’t be said in any other way––what are the mechanics of making that happen?” Phillips said. “This workshop will be an introduction to metaphor, contradiction and juxtaposition as techniques that open language as more than a sum of its parts.”

The annual Celebration will occur from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. in the Library, room 909- Horace Steele. The workshop costs $20. Attendees can participate in person and virtually. For the first time, the event will be a three-hour workshop instead of a two-day series of workshops.

“We have such a vibrant community of writers and creators in every corner of Cochise County,” said event co-chair Dani Foti. “We are thrilled and honored to create a space for that community to hone their talents, meet like-minded writers, and get feedback on their work from a successful author and poet – who also happens to be a native of Cochise County himself.”

Also included each year in the Celebration is a writing contest with cash prizes. Contest categories are poetry, short story and memoir. Winners will be announced at the Creative Writing Celebration on April 5 and published in the Herald/Review Media and the Cochise College literary magazine, The Mirage.

Dedicated to bringing in authors, publishers, and other experts to help writers improve their own work, Cochise College has been hosting the Celebration, along with a Writing Contest and a Kids Writing Contest, for more than 20 years.

Additional workshops will be announced throughout the year.
