IMG_5360Douglas, AZ  — Wednesday night the Arizona Western Matadors traveled to Cochise and defeated the Apaches in a close game, 78-82.

This was the first time this season the Apaches have suffered back-to-back losses. Just like last Saturday’s game, the score was tied going into halftime, 40-40.

The second-half saw the Matadors lead the entire way. In the final two minutes, Jaben Garrett grabbed two offensive rebounds that he finished at the rim, keeping the teams separated by only one point. The Apaches had a chance to tie the game, down three, with less than 10 seconds to go, but Arell Hennings couldn’t connect on a 3-point attempt.

Hennings finished the game with 23 points, while Jeff Long added 14. None of the remaining players were able to score in double figures.

“It was a tough loss to take. We have to weather the storm and get ready for Pima at home on Saturday,” said Head Coach Jerry Carrillo.

The loss dropped the Apaches out of first place and moved them to third in the ACCAC.

The standings in the ACCAC go as follows, Arizona Western and Phoenix College tied for first at 12-4 with Cochise right behind them at 11-5, and Eastern Arizona in fourth at 10-6.

Pima Community College comes to Cochise on Saturday, February 6th with the Apaches preparing to avenge their one-point loss from one of the previous games in Tucson. Tip-off for the game is at 7:30 P.M. with free admission.
