step 2Cochise College sophomore guard Jawan Stepney signed a National Letter of Intent with Central Washington University (CWU), on Thursday. CWU, located in Ellensburg, is about two hours East of Kent, WA, Stepney’s home town. Stepney is proud to be going back to his home state.

“I went on a visit and enjoyed the campus and coaches. I know a lot of guys on the team, and they really wanted me to go. I like what the coaching staff is about, and I am excited to be a part of the team,” Stepney said.

Stepney averaged 11 ppg, 4rpg and 4 apg for the Apaches. Stepney played an integral role on Jerry Carrillo’s back-to-back Region I championship teams.

“Jawan had great energy for two years in our program,” Carrillo noted. “He really improved his skill set, matured on and off the court and won a lot of games in 2 seasons here at Camp. He is a great young man to be around on the daily and will contribute right away to Central Washington’s team. Congrats Step.”

Stepney heads to CWU hoping to help improve the Wildcats 2015-16 record of 18-8. CWU was 13-7 in conference games. They compete in the Great Northwest Athletic Conference.

Stepney believes his time at Cochise will really help him next year, “I know the practice habits that I developed at Cochise will go with me to CWU. Coach Carrillo really prepared me for the next level and taught me what it takes to be successful.”
