The Apaches began the game with an 11-2 lead over the Bears on Wednesday night. However, that lead would be quickly cut into, and the game was all even at 14 with 12:14 left to play in the first half. The Apaches got within three points midway through the second half, but couldn’t overcome the Bears and ended up losing the contest 88-74.
The loss drops the Apaches to one game behind the Bears, in the ACCAC standings, with only two games remaining. The Apaches still have the best record for Division I teams, but their hopes of winning an ACCAC championship depend on how Phoenix College finishes up the year.
Cochise was led by Dallas Polk-Hilliard with 14 points and nine rebounds. Jawan Stepney added 12 points with a pair of rebounds and steals. While Arell Hennings and Emanual Shepherd both chipped in 10 points each.
The Apaches have two games remaining in the regular season. Saturday Central Arizona College comes to the Stronghold Gymnasium, Saturday, February 20th, where the Apaches will honor their sophomores as part of sophomore night. The Apaches find themselves on the road Tuesday, February 23rd, against Glendale. If the Apaches can win both games, they will be guaranteed the number one seed in the Region I playoffs, which begin Saturday, February 27th.
“Wednesday’s loss was tough, but we need to get ready for Central. We are still playing for a championship and a chance to hang a banner. We are going to prepare to do that on Friday at practice,” Head Coach Jerry Carrillo explained. Saturday’s sophomore night is also Carne Asada night at the gym, with plates costing $7. The men’s game tips off at 7:30 p.m.
