DOUGLAS — The Cochise College women’s basketball team lost to defending national champion Mesa Community College on Wednesday night after a last-second across-court shot lifted the Thunderbirds to a 52-49 victory.
Cochise’s Destiny Amezquita hit a 3-pointer with 1.7 seconds left to tie the game and the Apaches readied for an overtime that was not to be. Mesa’s Erica Vasquez quickly received the in-bound and heaved a miracle shot.
“We need to do things better at the end of the game,” Cochise head coach Laura Hughes told the Sierra Vista Herald. “We need to get stops; we gave them too many easy baskets.”
Cochise is 3-2 on the season heading into away games at Tohono O’odham on Saturday and Chandler-Gilbert on Tuesday. The Apaches return home Wednesday, Dec. 3, for a 7:30 p.m. matchup with Eastern Arizona.
Admission is free to all regular-season home games.
