DOUGLAS — The Cochise College Douglas Campus Club TRiO organization is sponsoring a Voter Registration Drive from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. Wednesday, Feb. 8, in front of the 600 building.
The driving purpose of the event is to increase the number of students, and even non-students in the community, who are registered to vote.
“This year will be the first opportunity for many of our students to vote in a presidential election,” said Jeff Henley, TriO Student Support Services academic adviser. “The amount of media coverage of the election is going to increase up to election day, and being able to vote will make this year’s political news cycle relevant to our student population.”
According to the U.S. Census Bureau, only 58.8 percent of 18- to 24-year-olds were registered to vote in the last presidential election in 2008. The students in Club TRiO are spearheading this drive in an effort help their peers understand the importance of voting.
“TRiO SSS wants our students to feel engaged in this year’s political process, and the first step is for them to register to vote,” Henley said.
Cochise County Recorder Christina Rhodes will be on hand to answer questions. Students and members of the community are invited to attend. Just bring your driver’s license or proof of citizenship.
