Cochise Celebrates 2016 Adult Education Ceremony

Cochise College held its Annual Adult Education Student Awards Ceremony and GED Recognition at the Sierra Vista Campus this Wednesday. Fifteen students were inducted into the National Adult Education Honor Society, while twelve additional students received their diplomas signifying their successful completion of the GED program, still more students stepped forward to accept an award for devoting time and energy to their education.

Susan Morss, the Director of Adult Education, spoke at the ceremony to a hall packed with students, families, friends and educators.

“I am proud of our adult education students because in order to complete our programs they must be self-motivated and make a time commitment that is often very lengthy,” Morss explained. “Many of our adult learners have faced great adversity and truly believe that education is the path to a better life. As our vision states, we are the bridge to better futures. I am proud of our program because we exemplify the Cochise College motto: big enough to explore and small enough to care. We try to help our students discover and expand their potential and aspirations and set goals for how to achieve them.”

Mitra Gregg, a graduate of the Adult Education Program, said she began the Cochise College Adult Education Program for her future and for her child.

“I knew I wanted to go to college at some point for my degree in social work, and also to just be able to help my son do better with his homework and show him that it’s important to graduate,” Gregg explained.

Gregg said she chose this program because the staff and faculty helped motivate and support her during this hectic time in her life.

“They are a lot of encouragement,” Gregg said.  “The program has been great. I think the most fundamental part of the program is that they help you work towards college classes.”

Cochise College Adult Education helps adult learners acquire the skills and knowledge necessary to enter the workforce or post-secondary education. Their focus areas are academics, technology and communications. Classes provide instruction for foundational skill building, high school equivalency test preparation, or English language acquisition for non-native speakers in job and college contexts.
