Cochise College is hosting a FREE AFA CyberCamp in June for middle and high school students to learn about the growing field of cybersecurity.

“Attending an AFA CyberCamp is the perfect way to get introduced to cybersecurity,” said Dan Guilmette, interim director for the CIS/Cybersecurity Programs at the college. “Whether you’re a beginner or have some knowledge, there are two camps to choose from: Standard CyberCamp and Advanced CyberCamp.”

The Standard CyberCamp requires no previous cybersecurity experience, while the Advanced CyberCamp builds upon the material covered in the standard camp and activities/tasks from the CyberPatriot competition.

“The AFA CyberCamps are provided free of charge thanks to the support of the Center for the Future of Arizona,” added Guilmette.

What to expect?

You’ll engage in hands-on activities during the camp and learn from experienced professionals. By participating, you may even have the chance to compete in CyberPatriot’s National Youth Cyber Defense Competition, further enhancing your skills and opening doors to future opportunities.

Details:

The AFA CyberCamp is open to all middle and high school students attending school in the Fall 2023 term. The camp will run from Monday to Friday, from 8:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. each day at the Sierra Vista Campus.

Standard CyberCamp (June 12-16) Attendees do not need prior cybersecurity knowledge to participate. Some fundamental understanding of computer hardware (knowing how to use a mouse, browse the internet, identify common computer icons, etc.) is helpful but optional.

Advanced CyberCamp (June 19-23) Attendees must possess some prior knowledge. Most of the advanced curriculum builds on material covered by our standard camp and draws from the activities/tasks in the CyberPatriot competition. Previous exposure to CyberPatriot or similar skill levels is recommended.

A basic English reading level is essential for both camps as many individual and group activities are written directives, and students must work alone or within small groups to accomplish tasks.
