In honor of Black History Month, the award-winning film “Hotel Rwanda” will be shown for free at three Cochise County locations during the first week of February.

The film tells the true story of Paul Rusesabagina, a hero who fought genocide. “Hotel Rwanda” depicts the slaughter of 800,000 Tutsis by the ruling Hutu tribe in Rwanda during the 100-day bloodbath in 1994. According to the New York Times, the film offers a “devastating picture of media-driven mass murder left unchecked.”

In Sierra Vista, the film will begin at 6 p.m. Wednesday, Feb. 5, in the Mona Bishop Room of the Sierra Vista Public Library. In Douglas, the screening begins at 6 p.m. Thursday, Feb. 6, in the Cochise College Little Theatre. In Bisbee, the show starts at 7 p.m. Friday, Feb. 7, at the Central School Project.

The film is rated PG-13 and the event is free and open to the public. Light refreshments will be provided at each location.

The film is offered through a collaborative effort between the Cochise College International Film Series and the City of Sierra Vista’s Commission on Cultural Diversity. For more information, contact Tanya Biami at (520) 515-5316.
