The first film in Cochise College’s International Film Series this year is the Academy Award Winner for Best Foreign Language Film in 2008, “Departures,” showing for free at three locations in November.
The first screening of the film is 6 p.m. Wednesday, Nov. 6 in room 900 at the Cochise College Sierra Vista Campus, followed by 6 p.m. Thursday, Nov. 7 in the Little Theatre on the Douglas Campus, and lastly at 7 p.m. Friday, Nov. 8 at the Central School in Bisbee.
The PG-rated film is about an out-of-work Japanese cellist who takes a job preparing deceased bodies for burial and for entry into the next life. He ends up transforming his job into a spiritual journey for himself along with the departed and their families.
This is a collaborative project sponsored by the college’s Fine Arts/Humanities Department and the City of Sierra Vista’s Commission on Cultural Diversity. Films are open to the public for no admission charge.
