Cochise College sophomore Matt Korcheck committed to the University of Arizona earlier this week after an unofficial visit with the Wildcats on Thursday.

Cochise head coach Jerry Carrillo said Korcheck will sign a national letter of intent this week, which makes Korcheck the second Apache player this spring to commit to a Division I program. Nathan Sobey is set to sign with the University of Wyoming.

The 6-foot-9 Korcheck signed with UTEP out of Sabino High School, but instead landed at Cochise for his freshman season, where he averaged eight points and six rebounds per game on an Apache squad that won the NJCAA Region I title. As a sophomore, Korcheck averaged 14.7 points and 6.5 rebounds.

“Matt really has worked hard to earn this scholarship,” Carrillo said. “Out of high school, his two visits were NAU and UTEP. Now, he’s turned visits down from Pitt, Washington, Auburn and visited Oklahoma and Arizona.”

Carrillo said in his 17 years of coaching in the Arizona Community College Athletic Conference, the University of Arizona has never taken a basketball player from the conference.

The spring signing period begins Wednesday. Korcheck will almost certainly redshirt with the Wildcats next season.
