SIERRA VISTA — The historical exhibit “Leaving a Legacy,” presented by Ceci Lewis, is now on display at the college’s Fort Huachuca Center, the former Smith Middle School, until Dec. 17.

“Leaving a Legacy,” a free exhibit, celebrates the lives and contributions of women of Mexican heritage in Douglas between the 1920s and 1940s. Lewis, an English instructor at Cochise College, is a doctoral student at the University of Arizona in the Mexican American Studies Department.

“This exhibition is an opportunity to begin addressing a gap in history that has resulted in the exclusion of the numerous contributions women of Mexican heritage have had on Douglas,” Lewis said. “The women featured in this exhibit demonstrate just a small percentage of the incredible women of Mexican heritage who impacted their community. While some have been recognized individually, this demonstrates how varied and powerful their collective contributions have been.”

The exhibit started its tour of Cochise County at the Douglas-Williams House and the college’s Douglas Campus earlier this fall. It moved to the Sierra Vista Campus library commons from Nov. 16-30.

Following winter break, the exhibit will move to the college’s Benson, Willcox and Santa Cruz centers, and in March it moves to the University of Arizona’s main campus.
