SIERRA VISTA — Students, parents and members of the community have a chance to explore the rich and diverse programs and partnerships available at Cochise College by visiting its second annual Engineering Night, from 6 to 8 p.m. Oct. 29 in the Sierra Vista Campus Student Union.

The evening will offer information about the college’s affordable engineering program, including degrees and certificates, transfer programs and internships, as well as outreach programs for students before they even get to college. Attendees will also learn about mechatronics, a leading-edge, multidisciplinary field where mechanics, electronics and computing meet.

All Cochise College engineering classes, offered at one of the lowest tuition rates in the state, transfer to universities within Arizona. The college is also partnering with Arizona State University’s Office of Academic Partnership and Motivated Engineering Transfer Students (METS) center to develop and support seamless transfer to ASU.

“It has been great working with Arizona State in building this transfer pathway. Our engineering department is looking for opportunities to develop transfer programs with other universities as well,” said Dr. Bubba Hall, Cochise College Dean of Mathematics, Sciences and Health Sciences. “Transfer pathways help guide students to successful completion of engineering degrees.”

Opportunities at Cochise College don’t stop at degrees and certificates.

The K-12 Outreach Program offers younger students a look into the world of Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics (STEM) every year through Summer Campus, The Math/Science Experience, Summer Bridge program and STEM Exploration Academy. In addition, the Running Start Program provides high school juniors and seniors the opportunity to attend regular high school classes in the morning, then join classes at Cochise College in the afternoon.

Once in college, students can get involved with the STEM Internship program and work for a local high-tech company, either full-time or part-time, during the summer or while attending classes.

“The work is meaningful and interesting and the life experiences are invaluable,” Hall said. “Present at Engineering Night will be industry representatives who actually employ the interns and can provide insight from their unique position.”

The doors open for Engineering Night at 5:30 p.m., with displays and information tables from the college, local industries and various technical organizations. Food and door prizes will also be available.
